Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister has been on the forefront for India’s fight against the deadly virus. Harsh Vardhan has been reported to take charge as chairman for the Executive Board from the date 22nd May.
Harsh Vardhan to take charge as Chairman for the next WHO Executive meeting:-
The aftermath of the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA), over video conferencing, Harsh Vardhan is all set to take charge of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board as chairman. It was held on Tuesday and Dr. Harsh Vardhan is all set to take charge from Friday May 22.
It was reported that 10 nations along with India for a period of three years to the Executive Board of the WHO by the 73rd World Health Assembly were elected. The news members are Madagascar, Oman, Republic of Korea, Botswana, Colombia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, United Kingdom and Russia.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan, an ENT surgeon by practise is reported to succeed Dr Hiroki Nakatani, who is the current chairman and is from Japan. The proposal was signed by the 194-nation World Health Assembly to appoint India’s nominee on condition of anonymity to the executive board. It has also been reported that post also seems a formality as an India’s nominee.
The reason being the unanimous decision made last year by WHO‘s South-East Asia group. The decision consisted of India’s Nominee election for a three-year term to the Executive Board. The India’s minister had spoken about India’s progress and precaution for fighting the deadly virus and on covid-warriors too. He had put forth for expressing condolences on loss as well as gratitude and appreciation over India’s battle against covid-19.
About the Executive board and Dr. Harsh Vardhan’s responsibilities as chairman:-
The Executive Board includes technically qualified 34 individuals, in the field of health and is a member state for the designation by WHA. This designation is for a period of three years for each one of the members. The main function includes policies and decisions of the Health Assembly to bring in effect while advising and facilitating work.
With regard to the meetings conducted twice during the year, with the main one in January and a shorter one in May. It has also been reported that it’s not a full time thing and the Minister just has to chair the meeting by an official.
It is also to be noted that the chairmanship has come amidst the growing calls for conducting investigation over coronavirus being Chinese origin. These are by Donald Trump, US President along with Beijing’s subsequent action.
